Raul Orlandini will return to the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards to test at Daytona International Speedway next weekend, December 19 – 20. Orlandini will drive the No. 59 car for Lira Motorsports.
The upcoming test session at Daytona International Speedway is an important opportunity for Orlandini, as the young racer from Lima, Peru, has had very limited opportunity to test on superspeedways.
Orlandini broke into the ARCA Racing Series in 2014, becoming the first Peruvian in history to make a start in the series. He also had the opportunity to participate in two days of test sessions with the ARCA Racing Series at Talladega Superspeedway last year, which is his only experience on a superspeedway thus far. Driving the No. 69 Ford Fusion, Orlandini proved to be a natural on the world-famous superspeedway.
“I’ve always followed the NASCAR races — Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Trucks — so testing at Talladega was an amazing feeling,” Orlandini added. “I learned of ARCA from watching NASCAR.”
Joining Lira Motorsports as the team’s crew chief is veteran ARCA crew chief Teddy Brown. Brown has worked with several quality ARCA teams in his career and is a proven winner in the ARCA Racing Series.
Since teaming up with Lira Motorsports, Orlandini has gained some valuable oval track experience in the ARCA Racing Series. Orlandini comes from a road course background on the Dakar Rally tour. The Peru native is a three-time INCAS Rally winner, a two-time winner in the 6 Hours of Peru and a winner of the South America Rally Championship. He also finished second in the famous Qatar Rally.
It was fellow Peru native Carlos Lira, dealer principal of Gary Yeomans Ford in Daytona Beach, Florida, that brought Orlandini to the ARCA circuit. Carlos Lira, a veteran sports car racer himself, is the man behind a number of race operations based in Port Orange, Florida, including Lira Motorsports and Michael Lira Racing. His son, Michael Lira, is a driver in the ARCA Racing Series as well.
The upcoming test at Daytona International Speedway may only be Orlandini’s second time on a superspeedway, but the young man is confident and ready to take on the challenge. Be sure to follow Raul on Twitter at @MonoOrlandini and on Facebook at /RaulOrlandini.
