Michael Lira Turns Fourth Fastest Qualifying Lap in Pocono Raceway Debut

Michael Lira could not have picked a bigger stage to notch his first top-5 qualifying result of the season in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards.  Driving the No. 68 Gary Yeomans Ford Fusion for Kimmel Racing, the seventeen-year-old Spruce Creek High School student from Port Orange, Florida, turned the fourth fastest lap in qualifying for tonight’s ModSpace 125 at Pocono Raceway.  Lira will line up in the second row when the green flag waves over the ModSpace 125, which is scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m. EDT and will air live on Fox Sports 1.

“The car felt great out there,” Lira said.  “I can’t say enough about this Kimmel Racing team.  I knew the car was good yesterday in practice.  We were tenth fastest and kept improving throughout the day.  It’s great to have this momentum going into the race tonight.  I feel really confident.”

Lira tested at Pocono Raceway with the ARCA Racing Series earlier this season, but this will be the first time that he has raced competitively on the 2.5-mile triangular track.  Lira was forced to miss ARCA’s first event at Pocono this season, because he was only sixteen years old at the time.  However, since he turned seventeen in July, he now meets the track’s minimum age requirement, and he’s looking to make the most of the opportunity.

Lira already has two top-10 finishes this year, one at Toledo Speedway and one at Mobile International Speedway.  Lira is hoping that his first top-5 qualifying run of the season will translate into his first top-5 finish as well.
