(Port Orange, FL) The 49th Annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing begins this Friday, February 13th at New Smyrna Speedway, and local driver Michael Lira has a full schedule of racing planned in both Pro Late and Super Late Model competition.
The annual event, featuring nine consecutive nights of racing, draws top racing talent from around the country. Additionally, with the event coinciding with NASCAR Speedweeks at nearby Daytona International Speedway, NASCAR drivers are often in the field as well.
Michael, the 2012 Pro-Late Model Rookie of the Year at the .48-mile oval, is scheduled to compete in a total of seven Pro Late Model races plus two Super Late Model races. The spotlight events on his schedule are the 50 lap Pro Late Model race on February 19th and the 100 lap Super Late Model race on February 21st.
“I’m really excited to return to stock car racing at New Smyrna Speedway,” Lira said. “We’ve been testing my Gary Yeomans Ford at the track over the past few weeks, and we definitely have a car capable of competing for wins. The crowd is always awesome at New Smyrna, and I’m hoping to put on a good show for the fans and get my No. 57 to victory lane.”
The 17-year old Spruce Creek High School Senior has already been very busy behind the wheel this year. He’s raced in three sports car races thus far, highlighted by his debut in the prestigious Rolex 24 at Daytona. He also raced in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season-opener at Daytona, and rang in the new year driving in a 24-hour sports car race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
New this year for the World Series of Asphalt, thanks to a partnership between NASCAR, FansChoice.tv and Speed51.com, will be live video coverage. This will allow fans across the globe, as well as in the stands, to witness the action as never before.
After his schedule of racing in the World Series of Asphalt, Michael will focus on the first of his 16 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards races of the year at Mobile International Speedway on March 14th. Besides his ARCA schedule, Michael plans more Pro Late and Super Late Model races at New Smyrna throughout the year. He will also be competing in a partial schedule of IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge events.
