Michael Lira Looks to ‘Get Out the Vote’

Port Orange High School student and racing sensation Michael Lira is looking to “get out the vote” as he seeks a spot on “Team Champion” in Champion Spark Plugs “Search for a Champion.”  Internet voting is open now through February 2 and fans of the Florida driver can help him reach the next level in his career.

“Sponsorship is such an important part of racing,” Lira said.  “The Champion ‘Search for a Champion’ program will award 15 drivers with funding for their 2014 seasons.  Participating in the contest is a lot of fun and I am hoping we can drum up enough support to help us with the funding we need to be successful.”

The “Search for a Champion” campaign kicked off January 6 as drivers representing various forms of racing from around the country submitted videos for consideration and voting by the public.  Fans can access Lira’s video and vote for him by visiting the site at: www.alwaysachampion.com.  Click the SIGN UP TO VOTE tab on the home page, then enter your name and email address to create an account.  On the next page, click the SHOW ME THE ENTRIES tab, then search Michael Lira in the top right corner.  Under Michael’s video, click the VOTE FOR ME tab to help Michael get selected to Team Champion!

At just 16 years old, Lira has already made a name for himself competing in various racing series.  After claiming the track championship at New Smyrna Speedway in 2012, Lira debuted in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards in 2014, where he competed in four races.  In 2014, he returns to the ARCA circuit with a goal of competing in 14 races with Kimmel Racing.

Due to ARCA rules, Lira will be unable to compete in the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway in February.  Drivers must be 18 years old to run the superspeedways the series visits each year.  Lira was, however, granted special permission to compete in the pre-season test session held at Daytona in December.

“That was a really valuable experience for me,” Lira said.  “Even though I can’t race there yet, the time behind the wheel will benefit me in the long run.  And the time I spent working with the team is also important as we get ready for the season.”

Finalists in the “Search for a Champion” contest will be announced February 18, 2014.  Fans who vote are also eligible to win prizes.
