It was an exciting weekend of racing at Winchester Speedway for Michael Lira in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards. The young stock car racer and Spruce Creek High School student from Port Orange, Florida, showcased his impressive driving ability throughout the weekend. Despite never having tested or raced at Winchester Speedway before – or even seen it for that matter – Lira started the weekend off with a bang by posting the fifth fastest lap time in the first practice session.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Lira said. “To come out and post the fifth fastest time in practice was a really good feeling. It was literally my first time on the track, so it was definitely a surprise. It’s really a testament to the quality of this Kimmel Racing team. They give me such a great car week after week, and I’ve got some of the best mentors around in Bill and Will Kimmel.”
Lira followed up the impressive practice session with a solid 12th-place qualifying run. With two top-five finishes already this season, the No. 69 Gary Yeomans Ford Fusion seemed poised for a third. Unfortunately, after a strong start to the race, Lira’s No. 69 car was forced to retire early with mechanical problems. The car that had shown so much promise in practice suffered a broken transmission and ended Lira’s bid for another top five.
“It was really a shame,” Lira said. “We had a top-five car easy. I’m excited to come back here next season though. I thought we ran really well considering it was the first time I’ve driven here. It’s another good learning experience that will help me win races in the future.”
Lira officially finished in 17th place.
The next stop for Michael Lira on the ARCA Racing Series circuit is Lucas Oil Raceway for the SCOTT Get Geared Up 200 presented by Federated Car Care. Race time is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1.
