PORT ORANGE, FL (January 25, 2016)– Michael Lira, 18 year-old ARCA Racing Series driver based out of Port Orange, Florida, will be behind the wheel for Racer’s Edge Motorsports during the Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge Series race at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway this coming weekend, January 27-29.
“I’m really excited about this opportunity. I love the ovals but road course racing has a totally different vibe because the attitude in the garage area is different. It’s much less about the setup of the car and more about the driver’s ability,” Lira explained.
Lira and co-driver, 22 year-old Cameron Maugeri from Ormond Beach, Florida, will be taking their chances in the Grand Sport (GS) division during the two-and-a-half-hour event this Friday in the #57 Traqgear / MOMO / Ford Performance Mustang Boss 302R.
“It’s going to be cool to have an all-Floridian driver lineup. Cameron has a whole lot of Sportscar wins so I’m confident that he can help us to a strong run on Friday.”
Lira has three races of experience in this car. Last season, he had the opportunity to run at Daytona, Laguna Seca, and Road Atlanta, where he recorded his CTSC career best finish – 10th place. Magueri has many wins under his belt in his Mustang in various Sports Car Club of America Major and Regional events.
“Last year, I was a little out of my comfort zone and just tried to keep my nose clean and bring the car home,” Lira said about his Daytona experience this past season. “I’ve learned a lot since then, and this year I can be a little more confident in racing in traffic.”
Lira credits his past experience on the road course in Daytona for his confidence for this year’s event. He ran the Rolex 24 last year in a Porsche 911 GT3 America in the GTD class, which he believes really boosted his confidence.
This race has a lot of sentimentality for Michael Lira. When he was very young, his father, Carlos Lira, ran this race as well.
“Watching him inspired me to want to race,” Lira said. “My dad used to run this race and many club racing events [at Daytona]. I was always there even when I was a baby, so to be racing here has its own special meaning to me.”
Carlos now owns and operates a highly competitive ARCA Racing Series team, pro-late model and super-late model program, and NASCAR Camping World Truck series team. Michael drives for the team when sponsorship is available for him to do so.
Lira is very excited about having the opportunity to run this race again this year with Racer’s Edge Motorsports. He would like to thank Traqgear, MOMO, and Ford Performance for coming on board this weekend to make this opportunity available to him.
