Fiery Crash Ends Lira’s Day Early In Winchester

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards was at Winchester Speedway over the weekend for the Herr’s Chase The Taste 200. On Saturday at the Indiana half-mile track, the schedule of two practice sessions and qualifying turned into a weather waiting game for Michael Lira and the No. 58 Momo/TraqGear/Ford Performance team. However, after light rain that fell throughout the day ended in the late afternoon, the drivers finally got on track for a one-hour practice session from 5:50 to 6:50pm.

Michael ran a total of 68 laps in the session, more laps than any other driver. He ended with the 7th fastest time, and a good idea of what he needed to do on race day to be even faster.

Due to how late in the day the practice session was run, the starting grid was set by car owner points. That placed Michael at 9th on the starting grid when the race began on Sunday.

Entering turn three on the the second lap of the race, Michael cut a right front tire down and hit the wall. When he hit, an oil line broke loose, causing the car to erupt in flames for the full length of the front stretch. Michael climbed from the car in turn one and was okay, but the damage ended his day. He was credited with a 24th place finish.

The next race for Michael and the ARCA Series is the Iowa ARCA 150 at Iowa Speedway on July 17th.
